THE FUTURE OF TECHNOLOGY IN HIGHER EDUCATION: DEVELOPMENT OR DISRUPTION?
AWS EDSTART GOES ABROAD TO BRING RESOURCES TO EDTECH STARTUPS
Dear Reimaginers,
This edition of your bimonthly Reimagine Education newsletter focuses on the work of three accelerators and incubators that we’ve had the privilege of working with over the last couple of years. We believe very strongly that there is great potential for highly effective edtech solutions to be created when edtech startups and institutions of higher education come together, and are excited by the number of institutions that are seeking to found, or partner with, incubators who can help transform idea into successful, scalable reality. We’re particularly enthused about the EDUCATE project, based at the UCL Knowledge Labs in London, and hope to see more institutions follow suit.
One of the most successful examples of institutional incubation is the subject of our first article. Towson University’s TU Incubator has, over a decade, transformed itself from a five-startup-strong general incubator to the mid-Atlantic region’s largest edtech-focused incubator, with its startups fostering employment, economic growth, and educational excellence in the region.
We’re very proud that one of the world’s largest, most innovative companies has chosen to support Reimagine Education once again, and an update from Amazon Web Services’ AWS EdStart program forms the basis of our second contribution. This edition, they outline their plans to take their EdStart initiative – designed to help edtech solutions construct effective, successful solutions on the AWS Cloud – global.
Finally, the WISE Accelerator has also supported Reimagine Education since 2016, and are, like both of our other contributing incubator/accelerator programs, aiming to support the development of innovative education technology solutions. Though their 2018 call for applications has now closed, they are encouraging engagement with edtech companies whose work has high potential for scalability and impact. Find out more about their work, and their 2019 summit, here.
Our various calls are still ongoing, and there are still three months to apply for the 2018 Reimagine Education Awards, one month to submit your application to join our judging panel, and four months left to suggest a speaking/panel proposal for this year’s conference. We hope to hear from as many of our readership as possible.
Never stop innovating!

Judging
We’re continuing our call for expert volunteer judges to help evaluate this year’s entrants to Reimagine Education. Want to:
- Gain extensive insight into improvements in education across the world?
- Receive global visibility for your role on our judging panel?
- Acquire accredited acknowledgement for your contribution?
- Receive a complimentary ticket to this year’s Reimagine Education conference?
Then we invite you to join the judges! Our call for judges will remain open until the 31st May, and all those who profess expertise in education are invited to apply for consideration. Submit your application here.
Speaking
If you’re an expert in your field, keen to contribute to urgently-needed debate about the future of education, then we want to hear from you! Our 2018 Call for Speakers has opened, and we’re accepting applications from educators worldwide! This year, we’re offering especial preference to those that can offer case studies of successful pedagogical innovation – demonstration above speculation, efficacy before prophecy.
Particularly desirable are case studies pertaining to successful implementation of:
- Artificial intelligence
- Virtual reality/augmented reality
- Learning analytics
- New forms of learning assessment (e.g. adaptive comparative judgement)
- Curricular redesign
- Approaches at the intersection of neuroscience and pedagogy
- Adaptive learning
- Hybrid learning approaches.
If you would like to convene a panel, please contact [email protected] with your proposal. You can apply to speak at http://bit.ly/Reimagine18Speakers.
Introductory Papers
Those who have only just been introduced to Reimagine Education are offered five introductory papers on the key focuses of Reimagine Education, which outline some basic information about each focus, and introduce some of the debates that we take up at the event.
